The Italian ceramic tile industry has long been working to reduce water usage and lower the risk of polluting reservoirs and aquifers.

The innovations introduced by the Italian ceramic tile industry comply with Sustainable Development Goal 6 of the UN Agenda 2030, which aims to optimize water usage in all sectors.

The 2020 Integrated Environmental Report, which analyzed about 90 factories, showed that 97% of the ceramic tile producers in the Emilia Romagna region recycle wastewater originating from the production process.

The average recycling rate is 107%, which means that companies reuse all of their own industrial wastewater as well as a certain volume originating from external sources.

  • more than 3 million liters of water saved annually
  • 99% of industrial process wastewater recovered
  • 56% estimated contribution to water requirements

A comparison between the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for Italy, Germany, and Spain shows that the Italian ceramic industry optimizes the use of its water resources.
