The Mater Ceramica project was launched in 2017 with the support of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development.

The aim of the initiative is to document Italy’s artisanal, artistic and industrial ceramic sectors and create a publicly accessible database by mapping the country’s entire production.

The work carried out by academics and researchers gave rise to the website materceramica.org and a publication called Atlas of Italian Ceramics covering the last 70 years of Italian ceramic tile production.

The website contains thousands of company data entries and an archive of their products,

data sheets of artists, artisans, architects and designers,

the history of Italian cities with an “established ceramic tradition” recognised by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE),

and information on museums, libraries and research and educational institutions.

All the collected material is published on the website materceramica.org and forms the initial nucleus of the Centre for Italian Ceramic Culture, the first portal devoted to knowledge of the ceramic sector.

It is a real treasure trove of technical knowledge, artistry and family traditions.
