Did you know that the Centro Ceramico is working together with Italian ceramic tile producers to develop the first photovoltaic tile?

The project is based on BIPV (Building Integrated PhotoVoltaics) technology and involves replacing the layer of glaze with photosensitive cells that generate electricity from sunlight.

The first prototype was created by installing 9 Italian ceramic tiles on a wall simulating the behaviour of a ventilated façade.

The electrical and thermal parameters were monitored eight hours a day for a period of two weeks and gave surprising results.

Despite their small size (10×10 cm), on sunny days the photovoltaic tiles generated a peak power of around 30 mW and maintained an ideal operating temperature.

This innovative surface may see further development by 2026, considerably reducing the energy consumption and emissions levels of buildings.
