Romani Surface Lab™, the new platform dedicated to surface technologies
A €5 million investment expands the Group’s production and research capabilities with new technological solutions that will feature prominently in the collections presented at Cersaie 2026.
Research continues to be one of the main drivers of growth for Gruppo Romani. This vision has led to the creation of Romani Surface Lab™, the new platform dedicated to surface technologies, further strengthening the company’s innovation journey and expanding the design possibilities offered by contemporary ceramics.
Backed by an investment of €5 million, Romani Surface Lab™ marks a significant evolution in the Group’s production facilities and its approach to applied research.
At the heart of the investment is the implementation and comprehensive technological upgrade of four glazing and decoration lines. Each line has been equipped with a pair of synchronised, multitasking digital machines capable of meeting a wide range of aesthetic requirements and market demands.
An innovative ink-filler system has also been installed, featuring dual filtration and feeding together with automatic recirculation of water-based inks and adhesives across all the print bars of the digital machines in the department.
The integration of this new technology into the production lines has therefore created an ecosystem that brings together design, industrial expertise and creativity. The infrastructure has been conceived to transform research into tangible solutions capable of meeting the needs of contemporary architecture while anticipating those of the future.
Going beyond the development of new surfaces, Romani Surface Lab™ was created with the aim of rethinking the relationship between material, technology and sensory experience. The innovations developed within the platform enhance not only the aesthetics of the product but also the visual and tactile perception of materials, their technical performance and their potential applications.

The first innovations developed within the platform are Mellow Touch™ and Contour Tech™, two technologies already available on the new collections that the company will present at Cersaie 2026 and which will also be progressively introduced across its most recent product ranges.
Mellow Touch™ interprets material comfort by combining tactile appeal with technical performance. Thanks to an innovative glazing technology, the material acquires a soft, velvety feel, a matt, anti-reflective finish and an exceptional ability to enhance the authentic character of natural materials. The solution has been designed for a wide variety of applications, including outdoor use, where it achieves an R11 slip-resistance rating.
With Contour Tech™, the company takes the three-dimensional qualities of ceramic surfaces to a new level. The technology creates relief effects synchronised with the slab’s graphic design, reproducing with exceptional precision the engravings, layers and variations typical of natural materials. The result is a surface with enhanced depth and realism, delivering a particularly authentic visual and tactile experience.
