Mapei Solutions for the 2026 Mediterranean Games
Mapei, a leading manufacturer of chemical products for the construction industry, has contributed to the refurbishment of several venues hosting competitions at the Mediterranean Games, the multidisciplinary sporting event held every four years and involving countries bordering the Mediterranean. The Games are taking place in Apulia from 21 August to 3 September 2026.
Mapei solutions have been used for maintenance and repair work, structural strengthening, waterproofing and the refurbishment of surfaces and flooring. Although differing in nature and intended use, all the projects share the aim of improving the functionality, usability and durability of facilities serving athletes, staff and spectators.
In Taranto, Mapei contributed to work carried out at PalaMazzola, the venue hosting the volleyball competitions. The project included the refurbishment of the exterior, with concrete repairs, painting and finishing work, as well as the renovation of the interior spaces through the repainting of walls and the existing rubber flooring. Mapei adhesives were also used to install new rubber flooring and to bond protective edging to the stands.
Also in Taranto, at the Erasmo Iacovone football stadium, work included the treatment of the existing terracing in the upper tier and the construction of new terracing, along with sealing work on various parts of the structure.
Other facilities in the Taranto area were also included in the refurbishment programme linked to the Games. Both the San Giorgio Jonico sports hall, which is hosting the boxing and weightlifting competitions, and the “Giovanni Paolo II” sports hall in Massafra, the venue for judo, karate and wrestling, underwent repair work and surface treatment of the terracing.
The programme involved not only refurbishment but also new construction. Mapei supplied admixtures for the new concrete pours used to build the indoor and outdoor swimming pools and the new terracing at the Torre d’Ayala Swimming Stadium in Taranto, the venue for the main swimming and water polo competitions.
Finally, in Brindisi, consolidation, sealing and surface treatment work was carried out on the stands at the Franco Fanuzzi municipal stadium.
