Apartment Higienópolis - São Paulo (Brazil)

Design takes centre stage in an exclusive São Paulo penthouse

Located in one of the city’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, the apartment offers modern, functional living spaces with panoramic views, enhanced by iconic furnishings and high-end materials
By Ilenia Carlesimo

A 600-square-metre penthouse in São Paulo, Brazil – the most populous city in the southern hemisphere – stands out for its interiors, which achieve a perfect balance of functionality and sophistication and serve as a true celebration of design. Located in Higienópolis, one of the city’s most exclusive neighbourhoods renowned for its elegant cafés, Michelin-starred restaurants, luxury boutiques and prestigious residential buildings, the apartment is the result of a complete renovation led by architect Juliana Cascaes. With over a decade of experience in the industry, Cascaes views architecture as a synthesis of emotions and experiences and believes that living spaces must always reflect the needs of their inhabitants. This philosophy is fully embodied in the refined penthouse she designed in São Paulo.

The primary goal of the project was to transform a traditionally structured apartment – previously divided by partition walls that obstructed natural light and views of the city – into a modern, open and functional home. The renovation was tailored to suit the lifestyle of its new owners, a young couple with a small child who enjoy entertaining and wanted spaces for socialising with friends and family.

The result is a bright, comfortable and inviting environment, distinguished by a layout that seamlessly integrates the cityscape into the living spaces, as well as a carefully curated selection of designer furnishings and prestigious materials, some of which were produced by renowned Italian brands. One example is the iconic UP5_6 armchair, designed in 1969 by Gaetano Pesce and produced by B&B Italia. A globally recognised fusion of design and art, this piece is celebrated for its bold anthropomorphic form, evoking a maternal womb, and its political and social significance. The attached spherical pouf, tethered to the armchair, symbolises a woman in shackles and makes a powerful statement on prejudice and societal constraints. Another standout feature is the porcelain stoneware from Gardenia Orchidea used in the living area and rooftop, a space that includes a kitchen, various areas for socialisation and a swimming pool. The chosen collection, Burlington Stone in an 80×180 cm format and Cream shade, offers an urban-inspired aesthetic while ensuring ease of maintenance and aligns perfectly with the modern lifestyle of the penthouse and its residents.
