Where rugged volcanic rock meets the deep blue sea. On the island of Pantelleria, in the enchanting setting of Cala Tramontana — a spectacular bay renowned for its biodiversity and distinctive seabed — stands Approdo Mediterraneo: a residential complex that sits seamlessly within the local architectural context, bringing together tradition and contemporary design, memory and comfort.
Designed by architect Giovanni Sammartano, whose practice is based in Como, the development comprises apartments ranging from 57 to over 100 square metres.
With direct views over the island’s crystal-clear waters, they combine advanced technology and environmental performance — all have an A energy rating — with an aesthetic of understated luxury.
The refurbishment and the composition of the building volumes draw directly on local construction traditions, as reflected in the dark volcanic stone perimeter walls, contrasted with white-rendered volumes and vaulted roofs traditionally designed to provide protection from the summer heat.
The outdoor spaces, which include a shared sun terrace with a swimming pool, barbecue areas and lounge spaces, make the most of the site’s topography to ensure a direct connection with the sea. Inside the apartments, too, the approach to materials centres on combining elements rooted in Pantelleria’s heritage with contemporary finishes.
One example is Cerasarda’s Tintùri collection: a range of diamond-shaped ceramic tiles that combine two or more colours to create dynamic wall compositions, enhanced by a glossy crackle glaze that evokes traditional craftsmanship. Used here in the Mariposa colourway, the collection creates a continuous dialogue with the colours and light of Pantelleria’s landscape.
