The many shades of burgundy

Like fashion, the world of bathroom design has embraced one of the most popular colours of recent months – burgundy – along with its many variations within the dark red family

(February 2025) | It’s all about nuances – Bordeaux, Burgundy, Bourgogne, Rubens Red and Ruby may seem similar, but they are far from identical. While they all belong to the family of deep, dark reds, their distinct undertones create unique variations. Bourgogne leans toward violet, fitting for a shade named after the French region famed for its vineyards. Bordeaux, another wine-inspired hue, takes on warmer brown undertones, while Burgundy has a more pronounced red base. From here, further variations emerge by adding, subtracting or emphasising specific colour components.

After first making waves on fashion catwalks, this palette has now firmly established itself in the world of interior design, appearing in everything from textiles and finishes to lacquers and accessories. Alessandra Castelbarco Albani, architect and co-founder of the Milan-based firm PLUS ULTRA, confirms this trend: “We love burgundy and are currently using it in a small glossy format for a new project. It’s undeniably classic and elegant, while also offering endless potential for combinations. It works beautifully with warm shades like blush pink and beige for a softer look, or with coral and salmon for those who want something bolder. It also works well with cooler tones such as sage green or sugar-paper blue – and for the more daring, even electric blue. Depending on how it’s combined, it can create anything from an understated, elegant aesthetic to a bold, playful pop look!”

In bathroom design, these shades open up a world of possibilities, whether as subtle accents or bold statements. Floor and wall tiles, furniture, accessories and even shower profiles now come in a full spectrum of Bordeaux-inspired hues.
