Surfaces for Hospitality & Wellness

As part of the Press Café events held during Cersaie 2019, the magazine GUEST hosted a discussion of materials and surface coverings for hospitality spaces such as hotels, resorts and spas, focusing in particular on their technical, functional and decorative aspects through a series of outstanding case studies. In these projects, ceramic serves not only as a surface covering material but as a distinctive element of the architecture itself and as a key component of the design and compositional language.

In the debate, introduced and moderated by Antonia Zanardini, editor of GUEST, and Francesco Scullica, associate professor at Milan Polytechnic, architect Alberto Apostoli presented some recent spa projects for Portopiccolo Sistiana, the first five-star hotel in Friuli Venezia Giulia, and for the Four Seasons Hotel in Red Square in Moscow. In these projects, the technical and performance aspects of the surface coverings play a fundamental role in meeting the essential requirements of safety, hygiene, cleanliness and maintenance.

The Bolzano-based practice NOA – Network Of Architecture presented the Hotel Hubertus project, winner of the first prize in the Public Building category of the Grand Prix Casalgrande Padana 2019, an annual competition honouring works that reflect the versatility of ceramic products and in particular the technical and artistic potential of porcelain.
