Ángela García de Paredes co-founded the architectural practice Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos together with Ignacio Pedrosa. Their approach reflects a deep commitment to ongoing architectural research, reflected in a shared design vision that informs both their teaching and practice. Each project combines meticulous attention to detail with continuous experimentation in which time is envisioned as an element of transformation and growth within the architectural process. Starting from an abstract idea, their architecture evolves into a concrete form through a language of clean lines, natural light, and material minimalism that gives space its expressive power. In June 2023, García de Paredes was inducted into the architecture section of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Spain’s most prestigious cultural institution, delivering a speech entitled La arquitectura como interpretación (“Architecture as interpretation”). It is this interpretive act that lies at the heart of Paredes Pedrosa’s design philosophy: every architectural project emerges from a profound dialogue with its location and landscape, blending harmoniously into its surroundings without imposing itself while delicately balancing past and present.
The practice Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos has completed more than 30 projects, many of which have won awards at Spanish and Latin American architecture biennials. Notable examples include the Archaeological Museum in Almería, the Valle-Inclán Theatre in Madrid, the Peñíscola Conference Centre, the Lugo Auditorium, the public libraries of Ceuta and Córdoba, and the Roman Villa La Olmeda (Palencia). Other significant works include the Valdemaqueda Town Hall, Espacio Torner in Cuenca, the Popular Children’s University in Gandía, and the Bibliometro library in a Madrid metro station. The practice has also undertaken renovation projects for the Bank of Spain and designed internationally acclaimed buildings such as the Spanish Educational Centre in Rabat (Morocco) and the Spanish Embassy in Piazza Navona, Rome. García de Paredes and Pedrosa also curated the Spanish Pavilion at the 6th International Architecture Biennale in Venice (1996) and the Latin American Architecture and Urbanism Biennials in Cádiz (2012) and São Paulo (2016).
Their long list of accolades includes Europan 02 and 04 (1991, 1996), the Spanish Architecture Award (2007), the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts (2014), the Eduardo Torroja Award (2014), the European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention (2015), and most recently, the National Architecture Award of Spain (2024). Their work has been showcased in solo exhibitions and at architecture biennials in Spain, Venice and Latin America.
Born in 1958, Ángela García de Paredes studied at the Higher Technical School of Architecture in Madrid (ETSAM), later earning her PhD from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) with a dissertation on the work of her father, architect José María García de Paredes. After completing her studies, she began her career at her father’s practice, which she later co-directed with her husband, Ignacio Pedrosa, following her father’s death in 1990. Alongside her professional work, Ángela García de Paredes has taught and conducted research at ETSAM’s Department of Architectural Projects since 1995 and has lectured at international universities, including as a visiting professor at the IUAV in Venice.
