Ceramics of Italy celebrates 25 years of design

Italian tiles take the spotlight in a documentary video entitled “Timeless Tiles: The Italian Legacy”, illustrating the applications of ceramic tiles in US architecture of the last 25 years.

Auteur filmmaker Francesca Molteni and architecture historian Fulvio Irace have teamed up to create a documentary video entitled Timeless Tiles: The Italian Legacy celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition in North America.

For a quarter of a century, the Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition has served as a showpiece for the outstanding partnership between American architects and Italian creativity.

Year after year the event continues to celebrate the finest ceramic creations and the inventive and original ways in which architects and designers use Italian tiles to define the spaces of American homes, large communal areas, retail environments, hotels and restaurants.

Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition testifies to a partnership that is more cultural than commercial, a perfect symbiosis between the twin excellences of Italian ceramics and American architecture.

In particular, the video explores the origins of Italian tile, its technical and performance characteristics and the architectural projects that have won the competition during these 25 years.

It also features insightful interviews with architects Daniel Libeskind, Michael P. Johnson and Jennifer Carpenter, who discuss the factors that led them to choose Italian tiles for their projects.

The 8-minute film was unveiled during the recent exhibition Coverings 2018 in Atlanta and will be screened at the Architecture & Design Film Festival in New York from 16 to 21 October.

It is a unique tribute to Italian ceramic tile as a distinctive element of North American and world architecture.
