Driven by Italy’s booming tourist industry, hospitality facilities are being upgraded with new architecture and services. One example is an imposing historic hotel built in 1955 in the seaside village of Marciana Marina on the splendid island of Elba, which underwent a major architectural renovation so as to offer its guests a higher level of comfort. Hotel Marina Garden stands on the northeastern side of the island, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation and just a short walk from the seafront. The ground floor houses the hotel lobby, the breakfast room and the lounge bar, all of which look out onto the attractive garden with private swimming pool. The hotel’s distinctive L-shaped layout allows it to extend around the open spaces with lawn and swimming pool and to house the communal facilities (gym, recreation room, etc.) on the main façade.
The lobby was renovated by architect Antonietta Ottanelli in a contemporary style while at the same time maintaining the traditional spirit of the island. This space makes successful use of Dekap collection porcelain tiles from Ceramica Fioranese, with a pickled and varnished wood-effect surface reminiscent of boat decking worn by the wind and sea. This creates an elegant effect in perfect harmony with the natural environment of the garden which can be seen through the lobby’s large windows. The colour white is used in the rest of the interior to maximise the sense of space and brightness, also guaranteed by the large windows overlooking the garden. Breakfast is served on tables clad with the elegant, colourful designs of Cementine Boho tiles.
On its upper floors, the modern 4-star hotel has large, tastefully decorated rooms inspired by the marine landscape where every detail has been carefully chosen to offer guests a relaxing and peaceful stay. The 45 large, essential and sober hotel rooms are all different but share the luxury of having free space. They feature natural materials and a colour palette based on delicate, restful white/beige tones. Special attention has been devoted to the design of the bathrooms, which stand out for the use of decorative panels in contrast with the minimalism of the bedrooms. The bathrooms feature striking special-effect walls with a mixture of decorations and original graphic designs based on the use of ceramic tiles from Ceramica Fioranese with new designs (Cementine Boho mix, Argillae and I Cocci series). The bathrooms follow a variety of different designs and original combinations of elements. In general, the decorated walls are isolated and emphasised by a more uniform backdrop treated with white, beige and mocha coloured cement-resin to create an essential envelope. The decorated walls give the bathrooms a highly distinctive personality. The Cementine Boho and Argillae tile collections in particular create an elegant, natural touch thanks to the perfect combination of earth tone colours. A mixture of different 20×20 cm Cementine Boho tiles by Silvia Stanzani, inspired by Boho Chic, a modern version of the bohemian style, adds a decorative touch. The collections Argillae by Davide Tonelli and I Cocci are instead inspired by a poetic world of the past, by old unfired clay and cement objects bonded to pieces of marble and recycled materials.
