The Blue Fin Building, designed for Donovan Data System Ltd, is located on Bankside in London and is part of a three-building redevelopment complex commissioned from Land Securities to inject new life into this part of Southwark. The Blue Fin Building is the largest of the three buildings and owes its name to the 2,000 aluminium fins that cover the entire façade and shade the interior. The angle and density of the fins were calculated to take account of the path of the sun in order to provide an effective solar shading system.
For these new offices facing onto the Tate Modern Gallery, the architects from 11.04 Architects Ltd. created a high level of design inspired by the latest theories of work efficiency and low environmental impact. The avant-garde offices feature the use of recycled materials, natural materials and sustainable technologies while the main priorities were comfort and a people-friendly atmosphere. The work environment has a vibrant atmosphere that makes for better interpersonal communication. The building has many facilities for employees, including a large external landscaped terrace, a winter garden café bar and a restaurant with views over the Thames. Chris Roche, principal design architect at 11.04, said that DDS’s new office environment has provided a platform for a renewed commitment to reducing energy use and a framework of corporate responsibility towards the natural environment. Henry Lawson, president of DDS worldwide and chief operating officer for Europe, declared: « Our architects have ensured, wherever possible, that only sustainable material be used in the fit-out of the office. We specified floor tiles made from recycled industrial glass waste. » In particular the floors in the cafeteria area use eco-friendly tiles from Trend’s Cristallino collection. Cristallino is a hardened transparent glassy frit agglomerate obtained by mixing vitreous granules with a pigmented binder to provide the colour. In response to the evolving global demand for eco-friendly, sustainable construction, many new and re-mastered colours in the range of Trend products contain considerable amounts (up to 78%) of recycled materials from ex-consumer goods or industrial sources. These products are made from body mixes that include recycled features such as washing machine portholes, rear-view mirrors and car headlamps. Cristallino is produced with 69% post-consumer recycled glass and has obtained Greenguard Children&Schools certification, thereby contributing to credits for LEED certification of buildings. DDS won the International 2008 Green Apple Awards promoting environmental research in the field of commercial strategies.
