The result of collaboration between prestigious French design firms, the Mandarin Hotel in Paris is a successful example of a refurbishing and change of use project for an imposing 1930s building. The unique location, in Rue St. Honoré between Place Vendôme and Place de la Concorde, is close to the Louvre in the heart of the haute couture district. The spirit is fully Art Deco with soft and sensual atmospheres inspired by the style of grandes dames of fashion such as Gabrielle Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli, with a knowing nod to the images of Man Ray.
« Transforming an office building into a luxury hotel in perfect Parisian style with oriental influences and attention to the dialogue with the surrounding architecture was a fascinating challenge for our practice, » explained architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, who was awarded the redevelopment project, as well as that of the façade and the large internal courtyard carried through as a partnership with the landscape architects from the Neveux-Rouyer group. « Our goal throughout the project was to preserve the character of the building, determined not just by the architecture of the main unit facing onto Rue Saint Honoré but also by the volume that on the upper floors offers views over the whole of Paris. »
The prestigious interior design project was entrusted to the creativity and sensitivity of Sybille de Margerie, who, as she herself explained, strove « to create something totally unique, that would convey well-being and emotion ». The 99 rooms and 39 suites offer an entirely Parisian reinterpretation of the mood that defines the chain of luxury Mandarin hotels worldwide, a vision that reflects the stylistic and cultural milieu in which the structure is located. This haute couture decoration is reflected in a triumph of materials and sophisticated decors, dark wood and bleached varnish, chrome detailing, mirrors, cushions, silk and velvet.
The bathrooms display a dominant use of glass, wood, white marble and mosaic, freestanding baths, large washbasins resting on vanity units covered with crinkled leather and wrought bronze studs. The large two-level spa reveals a poetic world with a profusion of nature-inspired motifs, stylised flowers on the walls, coloured glass alcoves with sofas, and white and red glass mosaic floors dotted with silver-leaf butterflies.
Amongst all these elegant, sophisticated materials, one element that stands out with particular intensity is the mosaics from Vincenza-based company Trend, chosen to furnish the spa, the bathrooms and the entrance lobby. Various collections are used, including Vitreo and Brillante, Karma and Aureo, some even incorporating elements of Swarovski crystal. They display a range of colour combinations, translucency and light effects and sophisticated ton-sur-ton shades that are fully in keeping with the elegant interpretation of luxury and 1930s Parisian aesthetics that inspired the entire project.
