Located in the heart of the southern Baronia region on Sardinia’s eastern coast, the town of Orosei is surrounded by lush countryside planted with olive groves and orchards against the backdrop of the sea and long beaches of fine, white sand. This extraordinarily beautiful natural environment is the perfect setting for the town’s splendid seventeenth and eighteenth century architecture. Strolling amongst the many noble palaces in the historic central square, we discover Hotel Antico Palathos, a small gem converted from an eighteenth century home through a meticulous and respectful restoration project that has succeeded in preserving all the architectural elements while renewing their functions and meanings.
The architects (Studio Pirisi, Orosei) retained the spatial layout, redesigning the reception halls, the kitchens and the noble bedrooms and converting them into exclusive modern suites that open onto terraces and large patios, each one different in terms of architecture and decoration. A great deal of care and sensitivity is also evident in the common areas, most notably in the restaurant, the library and the wine cellar.
The large restored courtyards offer uniquely picturesque views, their beauty enhanced by splashes of colour provided by Mediterranean plants. And colour is precisely the element that attracts the eye of the visitor given that the rooms re-elaborate the tones of the surrounding landscape with warmth, brightness and an emphasis on contrasts. An important contribution to the project was also made by the choice of materials. The suites and bathrooms use the Pitrizza series from Cerasarda, a collection inspired by the colours of Sardinia that is uniquely suited to the location. The contrast between the matt and crackle effect gloss tiles on the floors and walls is particularly successful. Plays of graphic designs and materials reminiscent of Gaudí achieve synthesis and balance in their juxtaposition with the wall tiles, recreating the colours of nature in the interiors. Patches of open sea appear unexpectedly in the sequence of spaces, while the warmth of the earth and the softer tones of the countryside are conveyed by the palette of the Quintana collection from Ceramica Serenissima, in which an old fashioned colour combines with the technical characteristics of a porcelain tile that emulates natural terracotta floors.
The building restoration project paid particular attention to traditional aspects, proposing a narrative based on objects and above all the well, symbol of the ancient ritual of drawing water. Likewise, barbecues surmounted by large chimneys become an opportunity for meeting and dining, a timely reminder of another rite from the past, a « signature » of the project that indicates its love for the place and its history.
