In a quiet neighbourhood of Bangkok, a smart young entrepreneur named Khun Pin decided to relaunch her family business, which has been producing a beloved rice-based snack for half a century. “It’s a special recipe,” Pin explains, “one that my mother and grandmother created from scratch, inspired by their love of cooking and using only local ingredients. People have loved this snack for decades, so I now want to promote it in a new way, preserving our heritage while creating a stronger, more evocative identity.”

As part of her rebranding strategy, Pin relocated the business to a new shop not far from the original site. This move marks a new chapter for the company and has a clear objective: to create a space that feels like “home”, transporting customers back to the brand’s origins when her grandmother first prepared and sold these distinctive rice crackers. For their project, the Scope Design team drew inspiration from the old family home and memories of the past, incorporating timber and original household objects used by Pin’s grandmother in the brand’s very first production space.

In the new shop, named Kaotang Mayuree after Pin’s mother, nostalgic touches are seamlessly integrated with a contemporary design language that reflects the identity of the third generation of the family. The result is a creative, modern space that remains deeply rooted in tradition. A few carefully chosen, evocative pieces of furniture engage in a dialogue with the warm, geometric lines of the walls and timber panelling.

Italian ceramic tiles play a central role in the interior design project. For the flooring, the designers chose tiles from Coem’s Massive Stone collection, which evokes the look of traditional dry-stone construction using solid blocks. The design leverages the technical and aesthetic qualities of this range – from its resemblance to natural stone and variety of formats to its slightly irregular edges – to create a floor that is anything but flat or uninspiring. Instead, the natural tonal variations of the tiles add depth and character, enhancing the warmth and authenticity of the space while creating a welcoming, inviting atmosphere.

“I learned from my family and my experience in food preparation that the best flavours emerge from care and attention to the smallest details,” says Pin. This philosophy is reflected in the intimate, simple and distinctly Eastern atmosphere of Kaotang Mayuree, where every colour, surface and object recounts the same compelling narrative – a story of women, food and tradition, and a desire to look toward the future.
