The colours of the sea and the Mediterranean maquis provide the backdrop to this former country house with a futuristic appearance. It is located in the central Italian town of San Felice Circeo, where ancient history has left indelible traces and nature is expressed in its most poetic form. With its unique combination of coast, plain and hills, this area of the Lazio region attracts visitors from all over the world.
An outstanding architectural project has injected new life into the building, which enjoys an exceptional location in the hills just a few kilometres from the town centre and offers breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Set in a panoramic position amongst the peaks of the promontory of San Felice Circeo, this private residence combines contemporary forms with the elegance of traditional materials.
The conversion project took account of the location’s history and the needs of the owners in a fusion of Mediterranean style and modern residential architecture.
Outside one can admire the splendid view of the Gulf of Terracina with the typical colours of the Tyrrhenian Sea and enjoy the perfumes of the Mediterranean scrub in the terraced garden. The 1,000 square metre site was designed with great attention to detail to enable the villa to blend in harmoniously which the history and tradition of the area despite its modern style. The architects sought to make the best possible use of the existing spaces while adding a new volume with an innovative look and strong visual appeal. With this in mind, they used 5×5 cm Sannini terracotta pieces with a ground finish to create a vertical and horizontal solar screen structure that gives the residence an exceptional aesthetic impact.
The use of natural lighting and the quality of the view were the two underlying principles of the conversion project, which was carried out masterfully by the architecture firm while respecting the history of San Felice in Circeo.
The straight, geometric lines are emphasised by the sinuosity of the terracotta solar screen. The white exterior walls fit in perfectly with the interior spaces, where the predominance of pale colours gives the villa a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. The project used a variety of materials from wood to terracotta, travertine and local materials to enable the contemporary villa to fit harmoniously into the surrounding landscape and to preserve the traditional Mediterranean flavours.
